(5/15/1931-3/23/18)

Elinor Coraretti Scricca PhD, 86, died peacefully in Bethesda MD in the early morning hours of Friday March 23, 2018. Born In Cleveland, Ohio to Ann and Anthony Coraretti, Elinor was the older sister of Teresa Coraretti Ianiro and beloved wife of Domenic T. Scricca both now deceased. Elinor was the mother of daughter Cherie A. Scricca of Napa CA, daughter Carole S. Maslin and son-in-law John W. Maslin of Bethesda MD, and the ferociously proud grandmother of Jullia Grace Maslin also of Bethesda.

An accomplished educator, instructor and administrator, Elinor graduated Most Likely to Succeed from Collinwood High School in 1949, Magna Cum Laude Case Western Reserve University in 1953 and went on to receive her Masters from there in 1959 and finally her PhD in 1978.

Elinor was fluent in four languages with a particular love of French. As a devout Francophile, Elinor taught French in the Cleveland and University Heights and Cleveland Heights Public Schools as well as at Cleveland State University. In 1969, she and Domenic moved to Ashtabula OH where she served as principal of Washington Elementary School before becoming the first female Superintendent of Ashtabula City Schools in 1987. After serving as Superintendent, Elinor became principal of St. John High School (her daughters’ alma mater) in 1992.

Having achieved her goals in Ashtabula and battled her share of lake-effect snow, Elinor moved with Domenic to sunny SW Florida in 1995. Restless in retirement, Elinor began to lay the groundwork for a campaign to become a member of the School Board in Lee County. She won two successive terms before finally retiring in 2012.

Besides her work, Elinor’s love and devotion to her family sustained her. She was devoted to her nephews Anthony and David Ianiro, attendant to her sister Teresa, ever caring of her mother Ann and enchanted by her granddaughter Julia. She spoke proudly of the accomplishments of her daughters Cherie and Carole and her favorite (only) son-in-law John. She celebrated 57 years of marriage to Domenic and held him in her heart since his death in 2013.

In 2003, Elinor founded Pride & Patriotism of Lee County, a non-profit for the arts and love of country, which uses a patriotic theme to bring together and celebrate the artistic talents of students in the presence of veterans who are recognized for providing the students the opportunity to celebrate their artistic talents in a free country.

In lieu of flowers, please consider charitable donations in her memory to:
